In a small South Carolina town, where it seems little has changed since the Civil War, sixteen-year-old Ethan is powerfully drawn to Lena, a new classmate with whom he shares a psychic connection and whose family hides a dark secret that may be revealed on her sixteenth birthday.
I’ve read this book cover to cover and I only know what Lena and her family looks like. The Authors made it very clear who’s important. The basis of the story is fairly interesting. The magical aspect isn’t thoroughly explained, but we learn enough alongside Ethan to not be completely lost.
The citizen’s of the town (Gatlin) take on the role the antagonists. They are against Ethan and Lena’s relationship, they are against Lena in general and there isn’t really a legitimate reason for it. The only reason they have is that her uncle is the town shut in. Most of the Teenagers and adults in the story aren’t given any defining character traits unless it has something to do with Ethan or Lena and it seems like their only motivation and reason for being in the story is to be against Lena and anything to do with Lena.
Ethan and Lena weren’t sufficiently fleshed out. They, much like the other characters weren’t given many defining traits or qualities but they were fun to read about and their journey was interesting enough that I didn’t have to drag myself to the end of the book and their romance was fairly realistic,
(as realistic as it can be with them having a psychic connection that was formed before meeting.) There was a small build up before they became a couple and they did have their fair share of problems and what not.
